Savour the season: 3 summer fruits and vegetables we’re loving right nowJanuary 10, 2024
Summer is in full swing, and that can only mean one thing: now is the perfect time to whip up a storm in the kitchen with deliciously fresh summer fruits and vegetables.
With so many exciting seasonal ingredients to celebrate this time of year, it can be hard to pick just a few as our favourites. But we did! Avocado, cherry tomatoes and baby spinach are each bursting with fresh, unique flavours that we are absolutely loving right now. Summer cooking with these seasonal staples not only guarantees superior flavour and peak freshness but it’s also a more sustainable way to fill your plate.
Locally grown seasonal produce requires less transportation, which means fewer carbon emissions from long-distance shipping. Plus, seasonal produce tends to be more abundant during its peak harvest time, meaning that farmers can grow larger quantities without relying on artificial processes.
Why we love avocados in summer
Ranging from creamy in taste and texture to nutty and buttery, avocados are deliciously fresh with a smooth consistency that elevates many dishes. Bursting with healthy fats, you can add these delicious fruits to toast and tacos, salsas and salads, and so much more.
How to store avocados
If your avocado isn’t ripe just yet (it’s still firm to the touch), leave it on the kitchen counter or in your fruit bowl. To speed up the ripening process, pop it in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana for a couple of days. Once ripe, pop your avocados in the fridge for two to three days until you are ready to use them.

These delicious tacos come packed with tender lamb rump, pickled radish, avocado and smoky grilled capsicum. These are some seriously next-level tacos.
Why we love cherry tomatoes in summer
These small, juicy fruits (yes, fruits!) are bursting with colour and flavour, plus loads of antioxidants. The perfect balance of sweet and acidic cherry tomatoes are a delicious way to bring vibrancy and zing to every meal. Great for adding fresh flavours to salads, balancing pastas, topping pizzas and much more, these little bites pack a big punch.
How to store cherry tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes are delicate, so it’s best to avoid the fridge. Instead, store them on the kitchen bench or in your pantry. This will ensure your tomatoes keep their colour and flavour.

Why we love baby spinach in summer
Baby spinach is an incredibly versatile summer vegetable that can be used in a range of meals, including salads, soups, pasta, pizzas, and so much more! Thanks to their soft, mild-flavoured leaves, they are the perfect way to sneak in a little extra greenery into your diet.
How to store baby spinach
If your baby spinach is loose, wrap it in dry paper towels or clean dish towels, and put it in the crisper drawer in a sealed container. If the spinach came in a package of its own, pop a towel in the container, seal it, and put it in the crisper.
